         Alappuzha (or Alleppey) is a city on the Laccadive Sea in the southern Indian state of Kerala. It's best known for houseboat cruises along the rustic Kerala backwaters, a network of tranquil canals and lagoons. Alappuzha Beach is the site of the 19th-century Alappuzha Lighthouse. The city's Mullakkal Temple features a traditional design. Punnamada Lake's snake boat races are a well-known annual event.

2. How to Explore:

Alappuzha is very famous for backwaters boating. Once you come to Alappuzha , you will see water everywhere and your heart will fly by seeing beauty or kerala beach and kerala natural places.

Usually people come here to experience house boat in backwaters. it cost around minimum 8k or 10k per day. They give breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you wanna experience the house boat, you can plan one or two days maximum. The reason is, you will get bored as you will simply float in the backwaters.


There are some budget friendly options to explore Alappuzha backwaters. You can take public ferry from Kottayam or Kochi to Alappuzha. The travel time is around 2 hours. You will get same experience as you get in house boat. The cost per person is just 25 rupees and you dont need any pre- booking.


There is another options where you can pre-book a sightseeing boat which cost around 500 per person. But You need to pre-book well in advance for this.


3. Transport

Apart from backwaters , there are more places to visit in Alappuzha. You can rent bike or car as per your comfortable. The scooty will cost around 500 rupees for 24 hours

4.Itinerary

Below are two days plan for budget trip. If you are taking house boat and you want to explore Alappuzha after that, you can also add this as part of your itinerary

4.1 Day 1:

Start by 11.30 am or before from Kottyam or Alappuzha from public ferry. You will Reach Alappuzha by 1.30 or 2 pm. After that you can Check-In Hotel and rent bike(check contact details end of the blog)

4.2 Day 2:

In the day 1, book Sunrise kayaking . It cost around 750 rupees per head.(check contact details end of the blog). You need to wake up by 5 am and Go to kayaking point. The Kayaking will go up to 9pm. Come back to room and Freshup and check-out room

5. Stay

You can stay near Alappuzha bus stop or Alappuzha beach where you will get all necessary transportation easily

9. Personal tips:

  • Create a google sheet to track your budget and actual expenses . It can also be shared with all people with whom you are traveling.
  • Create the travel checklist in google sheet not to forget the things required
  • Plan to visit as early as possible to avoid crowds.
  • Check local holidays of city (Because you may not find much restaurant or travels opened for ex: Holi or Diwali or Onam)
  • Try to keep enough buffer between one travel to another travel just to avoiding missing bus,train or flight
  • Note down all emergency number in shared google sheet
  • Create whatsapp group and keep add all important docs, itinerary planning sheet, emergency contact
  • Bargain as much as you can, especially when you buy anything
  • Download offline maps of entire city. It will be helpful , if you lost internet.
